Year Round Recreation
Please read the following rules, regulations and recommendations. Call us with any questions.
Excellent backcountry skiing, snowboarding and snowshoe touring terrain is located directly above the yurts in the winter. The north-facing slopes provide safe and consistent snow with perfectly spaced trees or discover the numerous open glades. Mellow snowshoe or x-c ski tours can easily be found below the yurts and above timberline. Spring skiing conditions can be enjoyed until late-May.
We do not recommend this as a trip for first time backcountry users. We recommend guides certified by the American Mountain Guides Association for those unfamiliar with backcountry travel in the winter. Failure by groups could include -- but not limited to -- unplanned bivouacs, members becoming lost or injured, having to turn around or requiring rescue.
The trip (6.2 miles with a 2,140 ft. elevation gain) requires skills in backcountry navigation, group dynamics, leadership and avalanche awareness. This includes leading a group in a backcountry setting for multiple days in the winter. The approach and terrain around the yurts is generally straightforward and safe in all avalanche warning conditions. We advise heightened awareness on the slopes above the yurts.
Upon arrival look for the "Yurt Book" -- this is a practical guide to the structure and the chores to make your stay safe and warm. A designated fire tender, firewood splitter & gatherer, snow collector for water, hydrator, cooking and cleaning are just a few of the chores required to make the Group a Team and make everyone's experience at the yurt a positive one.
There will be NO discharging of firearms, pellet guns, arrows, or any other devices that may cause bodily harm to humans or animals. Violators will be charged a fee as stated below to fix, repair or replace damaged equipment or property. We have a numerous trails that cross above and around our property and do not want to run the risk of injury or worse.
If you arrive and find something is not working, broken or needs repair, please notify us as soon as possible so that we can assure that everyone has a quality experience. We do everything possible to keep our facilities in good working order and have regular maintenance visits every 3-4 weeks or as needed. Please help us keep everything in good working order. Cell phone coverage is only possible by climbing up the old 4x4 road/uptrack about 20 minutes. If we don't know about a problem, we cannot fix it.
As the group leader and/or person who has paid for your group's trip, you are responsible for the well-being of your group and the safety thereof and the condition of our property. You will be responsible for all intentional or reckless damages and the credit card on file will be charged for any expenses relating to damages incurred by your party. This includes any cleaning of the yurt(s) beyond normal use or theft or destruction of any property from yurt(s). The person who uses their credit card for the deposit and final payment: shall be considered the responsible party and all necessary charges concerning said Yurt/yurts will be charged to credit card on file, no matter who in the group caused the damages.
Mountaineers can conveniently climb to the summit of New York Mountain (12,550 ft.) year round. Hiking, fishing and mountain biking are available from mid-June until the snow starts falling in late October.
The yurts are fully equipped with with cooking and eating utensils for a large group. In the winter, snow is melted for water. Food can be cooked on the propane stove or on the large wood-burning stove. In the evenings, light is provided by bright propane lamps for dining, reading, studying maps or playing games. We’ve tried to provide all of the necessary amenities needed to make your stay comfortable. A minimum of two nights is recommended if you truly want to have a quality backcountry experience.
